Absolute return

A positive return, as opposed to a relative return (which is expressed relative to a benchmark). Hedge fund managers aspire to absolute returns, while conventional managers seek relative returns, which may be negative, but still better than the market. Of course, hedge fund managers can protect the downside using short strategies, while conventional managers usually cannot.

Return = (Price at end of period) / (Price at start of period) – 1
