Markovitz optimisation

Harry Markowitz’s Modern Portfolio Theory introduced the idea that there is an optimal trade-off between risk and return in a portfolio, using a mathematical model based on the market return (‘mean’) and the movement of the stocks in the portfolio against the market (‘variance’). It assumes that investors are rational and that they will select the portfolio that best balances their expected return against their tolerance for risk.
