Since the sub-prime crisis, this term has referred to the ‘off-balance sheet’ investments and loans of banks globally.

During the great structured credit bubble, banks set up ‘special purpose vehicles’ (SPVs) designed to evade regulated capital ratios, creating in effect a vast, unregulated, ‘shadow’ banking system.
